At Matthews and Tannert Limited, environmental sustainability is not just a tick box. It is a core principle that is embedded in everything we do. From our planning and delivery to community work, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and making a positive impact in the communities we work in.
We recognise the urgency of climate action, responsible resource management, and the importance of resident voice in achieving sustainable outcomes. That’s why we’re committed to developing clear, measurable strategies that deliver real, lasting change across every contract we undertake.
Our Environmental and Sustainability Policy, aligned with ISO 14001: 205 is reviewed annually to ensure ongoing improvement. This year alone, we have made significant progress in our environmental goals.
This year, our environmental efforts have focused on three key pillars:
As we mark World Environment Day on the 5th June, we are proud to reflect on the progress we have made and share the steps we have taken across the business to build a greener future.
Carbon Reduction: Cutting Emissions across the Business
With a work footprint that stretches across over 90 miles—from North Lincolnshire to North-East Leicestershire—we know that milage and energy use matter. That’s why we’ve made carbon reduction a priority across our core business strategy.
To support our carbon reduction plan, we identified and evaluated our biggest emission areas:
Company vehicle emissions
Electricity usage
Supply chain emissions
So what have we done?
Fleet upgrades: All non-trade vehicles are now electric or hybrid.
Trade Vehicle upgrades: Older, less efficient trade vehicles have been phased out. Since January, we have welcomed 14 new vehicles to our growing fleet.
EV charging stations powered by renewable energy.
Smarter routes: Route optimisation, no-idling policies, and driver training.
As a result, we have managed to cut our fleet CO₂ emissions by 7.5% this year alone.
And in our offices?
Efficiency changes across our offices have had a big impact too:
Energy-Efficient Lighting and Heating: LED lighting and smart heating systems are now standard.
Flexible Work for Lower Emissions: Office staff who live more than 15 miles away now benefit from hybrid work schedules, reducing commuting-related emissions.
Sustainable Resource Use: Sourcing Smarter, Wasting Less
Sustainable resource use is central to our operations. By prioritising certified low-carbon materials and sourcing 80% of materials locally within 30 miles, we’ve supported the regional economy while reducing our environmental impact.
To further minimise emissions linked to transportation, we plan our deliveries to either our Head Office or Satellite Offices in Lincoln and Scunthorpe, using a nearby local base as a central distribution point.
Our Key Achievements:
Landfill diversion: Landfill diversion up from 91% to 95% through reuse, segregation, and better monitoring
Recycling: We are especially proud that across the business as a whole, year to date, only 0.67% of all of our waste created goes to landfill with 99.33% being recycled.
Office Upgrades: Office upgrades have included conversions to LED lighting, smart heating, and expanded hybrid working
Tenant Empowerment: Supporting Greener Living
Sustainability doesn’t stop with us—it extends to the residents we work with.
We’ve been working directly with tenants to help them make environmentally friendly choices at home. From sharing practical tips on energy saving, to supporting greener home upgrades, our aim is to make it easier for everyone to live more sustainably.
We are also excited to introduce a new Resident focused e-Guide: Think Green: A Guide to Everyday Sustainability in Your Home, which can be viewed below.
We are proud of how far we have come in the last twelve months, but we know there is more to do.
At Matthews and Tannert, sustainability is a journey we’re committed to for the long haul. Whether it's cutting emissions, sourcing smarter, or empowering our communities, we're building a greener future.
